Exam Preparations


X-Ray

  • No special prep required.

Mammography

  • No deodorant, powder or lotions.
  • Patient must not be pregnant
  • Patients who are breast-feeding, must wait 6 months after stopping before having a mammogram.

Bone Density

  • No special prep required.

Ultrasound

Abdominal Ultrasound (Liver, Common Bile Duct (CBD ) , Spleen, Gallbladder, Pancreas, Aorta)

  • Nothing to eat or drink after midnight. (You may take your medications with a small amount of water)

Pelvic/Transvaginal Ultrasound

  • Drink 32 oz. of clear liquids 1 hour prior to exam.
  • Do not void until exam is complete. (You must have a full bladder for exam)

Renal Ultrasound

  • No special prep required.

Obstetrical Ultrasound

  • (First Trimester Only) Drink 32 oz. of clear liquids 1 hour prior to exam.
  • Do not void until exam is complete. (You must have a full bladder for exam)

CT Scan

CT With Oral and/or IV Contrast (A.M. APPOINTMENTS)

*Pick up the barium from the Imaging Center at least one day prior to the exam*

  • Drink first bottle at bedtime. (Nothing to eat or drink after the first bottle is consumed, until the exam is complete)
  • Drink second bottle 2 hours prior to scheduled exam.

*Diabetic patients (See additional instructions)

CT WITH ORAL AND/OR IV CONTRAST (P.M. APPOINTMENTS)

*Pick up the barium from the Imaging Center at least one day prior to the exam*

  • Eat a light breakfast.
  • Drink first bottle 4 hours prior to exam.
  • Drink second bottle 2 hours prior to exam.

*Diabetic patients (See additional instructions)

* Diabetic Instructions
Radiologic studies involving the use of IV contrast can lead to acute alteration of renal function and have been associated with lactic acidosis in patients receiving Glucophage (Metformin).

Therefore, for patients receiving IV contrast and on Glucophage (Metformin), adhere to the following.

  1. Glucophage (Metformin) should be discontinued at the time of or prior to the procedure.
  2. Glucophage (Metformin) should be withheld for 48 hours after the procedure.
  3. After 48 hours renal function test must be performed.
  4. If renal function test are normal the patient may be allowed to continue medication.
